Dallas Goreham, 11, from Woods Harbor, Nova Scotia, was hunting for sea glass recently when he discovered a bottle with a note inside of it. The note said, “Hi friend, I am a visitor to Gloucester (MA). I hope you will let me know if/when you find this. Cheers, Rita.” The letter was dated August 19, 2000. After 18 years, the bottle and letter had been discovered! It traveled from Massachusetts to Canada during that time.
Dallas and his family found that the email provided in the letter was no longer active. However, with some Internet sleuthing, they found the letter’s author, Ruth Ganim, 80, who was currently living in Buffalo, New York. Upon contacting Ruth, she told CBC News, “It’s the most exciting time I’ve had in a long time.”
The two families have since developed a friendship based upon a very similar hobby. Tara Goreham, Dallas’ mom, makes crafts out of sea glass while Ruth Ganim’s daughter makes jewelry out of sea glass. Said Ruth, “I think it was meant to be.”
