As federal officials report a steep increase in the number of flu cases nationwide, the Central New York area is following the national trend. For the week of December 23rd, the Onondaga County Health Department stated that there were 71 new cases of the flu reported. That was up by 60 cases since the beginning of December. There have been 158 cases in the county since the flu season started.
Most of the people infected were those who did not get a flu shot this season. Doctors recommend that everyone over the age of 6 months should get the shot. If you get the shot and still get the flu, it will be a milder version.
There is still time to get the influenza vaccination this season. Doctors urge people to get the shot to protect themselves and their families. In the meantime, remember that it is also important to wash your hands and keep them away from your face. With the flu season in full swing, it is important to follow these recommendations.
