A Rare East Asia Mandarin Duck Is Living In New York City!

A rare duck has taken up residence in Central Park, New York City, and officials have decided that it is welcome to stay there! The rare Mandarin duck showed up in late October and seems to have made itself quite comfortable in the City!

The duck is native to East Asia, and officials have no clue how it ended up in Manhattan. However, since its arrival, the duck seems to have taken a liking to its new living arrangements. As of now, the animal appears healthy. “It’s able to fly, it’s able to feed, and it seems to be sociable with the other water fowl in the park,” said Urban Park Ranger John McCoy. “So right now we’re going to leave [it] alone,” McCoy continued.

Michelle Ashkin, co-director of education at the Wild Bird Fund, says New Yorkers are lucky to have such a beautiful bird to see. “This is a wonderful opportunity to see a beautiful animal,” she said. It sure seems that way no matter how the duck came to Central Park
