Unfortunately, the only drugstore/pharmacy located in downtown Syracuse is going to be closing. Walgreens, which acquired Rite Aid in 2015, made the announcement this past Wednesday.
The store located at 301 South Salina Street, has been a fixture in downtown since the 1979. The pharmacy will close on November 26th. The store will close on December 10th. All prescriptions will be transferred to the Rite Aid pharmacy located at 522 West Onondaga Street which is about a mile away.
The Downtown Committee of Syracuse were surprised by the closing. Merike Treier, The Committee’s executive director, is hoping to discuss the closing with Walgreens soon. “If the company is pursuing alternate plans than reopening as a Walgreens, we would like to work with them,” Treier said. She also is hoping that the company will “maintain a presence in downtown Syracuse.” Let’s hope that’s the case!
