The Last Surviving Munchkin From The Wizard Of Oz Passes Away

Jerry Maren passed away on May 24, 2018 at the age of 98. Who was Jerry Maren you may ask? Well, Jerry was the last surviving Munchkin from the 1939 classic move, “The Wizard of Oz.” In fact, Jerry was the “Lollipop Kid” who famously welcomed Dorothy to Munchkin Land.

Jerry’s career spanned more than 70 years. He played the Hamburgler and Mayor McCheese in McDonald’s commercials. However, his role in “The Wizard of Oz” always was his favorite role. Jerry would frequently attend film conventions, Munchkin reunions, and other events that would honor the movie.

Jerry stood 4 foot 3 inches tall. He was one of 100 people recruited to play the Munchkins. According to Jerry, he ad-libbed the scene where he hands Dorothy the oversized lollipop. The director of the movie liked the idea so much that he kept in in the finished movie. Rest In Peace, Jerry. Your place in movie history in secure.
