No Sweethearts Candy This Valentines's Day? Say It Isn't So!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and a traditional staple of that romantic holiday is the little Sweethearts heart shaped candy that have little sayings on them. The little candies will say “Be Mine,” or “You’re Cute,” among other little phrases. Well unfortunately, the candies will not be available this year! Say it isn’t so! But it’s true!

Last year, the iconic 150 year old New England candy maker Necco (New England Confectionary Company), the makers of Sweethearts candy, went out of business. During an auction, Necco was bought by Round Hill Investments who later sold it to Spangler Candy Company. However, the sale took place in September of 2018 which was not enough time for Spangler to produce enough Sweethearts candies for Valentine’s Day 2019. It took Necco 11 months to produce the 8 billion Sweethearts needed for Valentine’s Day.

But never fear! The Spangler Candy Company has promised that the candies will be back for Valentine’s Day 2020! The company said that the little candies will be back in full force next year! So while there will be no little Sweethearts this year, we can look forward to their return in 2020!
