A winter weather advisory has been issued for several counties in Central New York, warning residents to prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions during Wednesday's evening commute.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton issued the advisory on Wednesday (February 18), which will remain in effect from noon today until 4 a.m. Thursday. The advisory covers Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, Cortland, Chenango, Otsego, and Delaware counties.

Mixed precipitation is expected throughout the affected areas, with total snow accumulations up to 2 inches and ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch. Northern Oneida County might see higher snowfall totals of up to 4 inches.

"Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute," states the weather service. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling.

The forecast for Wednesday includes a chance of rain showers in the morning, transitioning to snow showers mixed with rain later in the day. Areas of dense fog are expected before 8 a.m., with a high temperature near 37 degrees. Wednesday night will bring continued snow showers, possibly mixing with freezing rain after 11 p.m. before gradually ending, with overnight lows around 24 degrees.

Safety experts recommend several precautions for those who must travel during these conditions. The National Weather Service advises drivers to ensure their gas tanks are full and to equip vehicles with essential winter supplies including windshield scrapers, jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, and non-perishable food.

"When traveling out of town in hazardous winter weather, inform your family or friends of your destination, planned route, and estimated time of arrival," the weather service recommends.
