New Yorkers looking for a no-cost outdoor activity this Valentine's Day weekend can grab their fishing gear and head to local waterways as the state's first Free Fishing Weekend of 2026 begins Saturday (February 14).

During the two-day event, which runs through Sunday (February 15), anglers of all experience levels can fish without purchasing a license, though all other fishing regulations remain in effect, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Free Fishing Days program, which began in 1991, aims to introduce newcomers to the sport while promoting conservation and outdoor recreation. The initiative supports Governor Kathy Hochul's "Get Offline, Get Outside" campaign, which encourages families to spend more time enjoying outdoor activities.

For those interested in ice fishing, safety should be the top priority. Experts recommend staying close to shore unless accompanied by someone experienced who understands safe ice thickness and local conditions. Always inform someone of your fishing location and expected return time.

This weekend's warming temperatures—with highs expected to reach the upper 30s to lower 40s across upstate —offer a welcome break from recent bitter cold and may provide comfortable conditions for outdoor fishing activities.

Can't make it this weekend? Additional Free Fishing Days are scheduled for June 27-28, September 26, and November 11, according to WFMZ.

Outside of these designated free days, anglers over age 16 must have a valid fishing license to fish in New York State waters.
