Central New York residents are preparing for a significant winter storm system expected to hit the region this weekend, with forecasters predicting heavy snowfall that could create dangerous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire Central New York region from Sunday morning through Monday evening. Meteorologists are warning that total snow accumulations could reach between 12 and 18 inches across eastern New York and western New England.

"Snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times, especially on Sunday night," according to the weather alert. "The highest snowfall amounts are expected across the eastern Catskills, Mid Hudson Valley, and southwestern New England."

Before the weekend storm arrives, parts of the region are already dealing with lake effect snow. A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday evening for Hamilton and Northern Herkimer Counties, where an additional 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible under the most persistent bands, with winds gusting up to 35 mph.

The upcoming storm system could significantly impact Monday's commutes, with officials advising residents to consider delaying travel if possible. The National Weather Service describes it as "an impactful long-duration winter storm" that will move through the area from Sunday into Monday.

For those who must travel during the storm, authorities recommend extreme caution, advising motorists to drive slowly, leave plenty of room between vehicles, and be prepared for snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

Local emergency management officials are urging residents to prepare emergency kits, check on elderly neighbors, and ensure they have necessary supplies before the storm hits.
