Tate McRae is opening up about navigating her romance and breakup with The Kid LAROI in the public eye.

The "Sports Car" singer, 22, explained in a new cover story for Rolling Stone published Thursday (December 11) that the public reaction to her relationship, as well as the interest in her private life in general, was overwhelming to experience.

"It was really scary and overwhelming," she said. "I would never talk that way, even about my friends' lives. I didn't realize how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life — because no one knows the full story of anything, ever."

McRae and The Kid LAROI, 22, first sparked romance rumors in January 2024 and appeared to confirm their relationship a few months later after being spotted spending more together, per People. Fans speculated that their romance came to an end this year after they each dropped songs with telling lyrics, and the "greedy" singer confirmed to Rolling Stone that the artists went their separate ways in June. However, she hit back at commenters who are "painting a situation that's worse than it is."

"What I've had to realize is that he's going to write songs and I'm going to write songs, and that's our way of expressing ourselves," she said. "That's our art, that's our job. And once it's out there, it's not mine anymore."
