Motorists in Syracuse should prepare for significant traffic changes on Interstate 81 starting Monday (March 17). The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced that I-81 southbound will be reduced to one lane between Exits 23A-23B-22 and Exit 20. This closure will occur daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday (March 21) to facilitate the removal of the Spencer Street bridge abutment and retaining wall as part of the I-81 Viaduct Project.

According to NYSDOT, these construction activities are weather-dependent and may change based on conditions. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones, as fines are doubled for speeding. Repeat offenders could face license suspension.

Local Syracuse news emphasizes the importance of safety during this period, reminding drivers that "lives are on the line." For real-time traffic updates, commuters can visit 511NY.org or use the 511NY mobile app.

The I-81 Viaduct Project is part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and traffic flow in the Syracuse region. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and plan their routes accordingly to minimize congestion.
