Is Your Turkey Ready For The Oven? Here Are Some Suggestions For Defrosting

Thanksgiving is less than a week away! Is your turkey ready? By that we mean is your turkey ready for the oven? According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it can take anywhere from 2-6 days to defrost the bird depending on the size.

An 8-12 pound turkey will take 2-3 days to defrost. On the other end, a 20-24 pound turkey will take 5-6 days to defrost. Birds in between those two sizes can take anywhere from 3-5 days to defrost.

The USDA says that the safest way to defrost a turkey is in the refrigerator. You can also submerge the bird in cold water, or defrost it in a microwave. You could put the turkey in the oven frozen, but it will take twice as long to cook!
