As the United States continues to move towards a “cashless” society, Philadelphia has become the first city to ban cashless stores. Some retailers are beginning to move towards stores that strictly use credit or debit cards, and cities are concerned that individuals without either could be left out in the cold.
Philadelphia’s law, which requires all businesses to accept cash goes into effect on July 1st, and comes with a $2,000 fine for companies that refuse to accept cash. Similar laws are being considered in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
One question arising from this legislation is whether cashless Amazon Go stores will be affected under these new laws. Amazon said that it will because customers do not have to be membership Prime members to shop there, just have an Amazon account. Interesting legislation, huh? Any thoughts?
