Although winter doesn’t officially end until March 20, 2019, meteorological winter ended on March 1st. Meteorological winter is defined as the three coldest months of the year, which is usually December, January, and February. Meteorologists base winter statistics on those three months. So how did Central New York do this winter?
Well, according to Newschannel 9 meteorologist Kate Thornton, it really wasn’t an impressive winter. Despite a short bout with the dreaded Polar Vortex and a few decent snowstorms, Thornton said it was really an average winter.
The statistics for meteorological winter is CNY are as follows:
Winter 2018-2019:
•Average temperature: 26.2 degrees which is .1 degrees below normal;
•Total precipitation: 9.37” which is 1.58” above normal;
•Total snowfall: 74.9” which is 17.1” below normal (due to a December that was 18” below normal!)
So there you have it! A relatively normal winter by statistical averages. However, we still have March ahead of us and it usually comes in like a lion!
