Freezing Rain And Frigid Temperatures Create A Natural Wonder-Ghost Apples!

Nature can create some interesting phenomena. Take the “ghost apples” that formed on some apple trees in Sparta, Michigan. Andrew Sietsema was doing some pruning on his apple trees after some freezing rain and very frigid temperatures when he encountered the ghost apples.

Ghost apples are hallowed-out ice casings of apples that were never harvested. When freezing rain fell on the apples, the outside of the apple turned to ice, but the insides of the apple turned to a mushy substance because apples have a lower freezing point than water. Eventually the inside and the skin of the apple seep through the bottom of the ice and fall to the ground leaving an iced formation of the apple!

The icy formation of the apple looks like a Christmas bulb and is very fragile. However, if does leave a beautiful formation hanging on the tree. Since it requires some very special circumstances to happen before a ghost apple forms, it is a rarity to see, but a very special formation to see if you are lucky enough to come upon one!
