Wegmans Announces Date When The Company Will Discontinue Using Plastic Bags

Wegmans, the Rochester-based supermarket chain, has released the date when all stores in New York will no longer be using plastic bags to carry groceries home. The date is January 27, 2020. At that time, the company will also institute a 5 cent per paper bag fee for those customers who want to use paper bags to bring groceries home.

The move comes earlier than the March 1st date New York State has mandated in a law that was passed which was designed to eliminate single-use plastic grocery bags. The law was passed for environmental purposes by the New York State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Wegmans hopes to convert its shoppers to all reusable shopping bags for environmental purposes. The company sells reusable shopping bags at all of its stores in Central New York for 99 cents. Get those bags ready, folks!
