Syracuse police say they are applying for a state grant of up to $50,000 to install permanent surveillance cameras at Clinton Square.

The grant would replace the portable surveillance trailer police use to monitor events at Clinton Square, such as the tree lighting ceremony. Officials say the plan is to focus monitoring on festivals and large gatherings, giving the department the opportunity to assess any problems and plan a response. The department also agreed to a request from the New York Civil Liberties Union to protect peaceful protesters from unnecessary monitoring.
