South Side Supermarket Dream Aided By Common Council

South Side Supermarket Dream Aided By Common Council

The Syracuse Common Council acted to help the development of a South Side supermarket long sought by residents in the neighborhood.

The Common Council voted Monday to seize 18 tax-delinquent properties -14 vacant lots and four vacant buildings - all clustered around a commercial property at 611 South Avenue. It's the location community organizers want to use to attract a new PriceRite grocery store. The group says there's no final commitment to build, but obtaining the property is a big step toward that. The seized property would eventually be sold to the nonprofit Jubilee Homes, who owns the existing commercial property and is involved in getting the supermarket built.
