SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ State transportation officials have revealed four tunnel plans that could be part of the project to reconstruct Interstate 81 where it runs through the city of Syracuse.

Department of Transportation officials say the tunnels would replace the elevated stretch of I-81 in downtown Syracuse. DOT will discuss the tunnel proposals during a public meetings being held Thursday at the Everson Museum.

The state is gathering public opinion regarding the various proposals for the aging stretch of the highway in Syracuse. The plans include rebuilding the highway or tearing down the elevated portion and turning it into a boulevard with stop lights and cross streets.

The north-south I-81 runs from the Canadian border to the Pennsylvania line near Binghamton, and it's used by thousands of vehicles a day in Syracuse.
