Syracuse, N.Y. - The North Side's Franciscan church is taking special donations to assist the Philippines.

The church shares many connections to the local Filipino community including one of their Friars.

"I've seen many storms and its part of the weather patter there but to expect something like this was just not part of our imagination," says Father Eric De La Pena who is from the region and a priest at the Franciscian Chuch of the Assumption. "The massive destruction that was found after was just way beyond what people thought it could be."

The UN estimates that at least 10,000 people lost their lives and nearly 2 million people are homeless.

Every month Father De La Pena says a mass for the Filipino community; this time around there will be a special collection to assist those devastated by the super-storm earlier this month. The next Filipino mass is Sunday Dec. 1st at 3:00 pm.

For those unable to make the mass they can mail a check to the church at 812 N. Salina St. Syracuse, NY 13208.
