Watertown, N.Y. – An inside source with the state Department of Transportation says that I-81 is now open north of Syracuse; however drivers will still run into snowy conditions.

A 50-mile section of Interstate 81 north of Syracuse remained closed for most of the day after lake-effect storms caused treacherous driving conditions.

The state Department of Transportation closed the highway early Wednesday morning from Brewerton, just north of Syracuse, to Watertown in Jefferson County. I-81 from Watertown to the Canadian border was opened earlier today after being shutdown when weather worsened on Tuesday.

The Brewerton-to-Watertown section of the highway was closed Monday night, but a portion of that stretch had reopened Tuesday night when driving conditions improved.
