A Homer man is in custody after being charged with trying to steal a $25,000 backhoe.

Cortland County sheriff's deputies say Jeremy Olsen was confronted by a neighbor of the barn on Little York Road from where Olsen took the backhoe.  Olsen returned the backhoe to the barn and fled, but deputies found him nearby.  The investigation revealed Olsen had taken several chainsaws along with the backhoe, and had also tried to steal a truck behind the barn.  He was charged with burglary and attempted grand larceny, and is being held without bail.
