Some 500 bicyclists are passing through Syracuse today making their way through the 16th annual Cycling The Erie Canalway Tour, sponsored by Parks and Trails New York.
The 400-mile tour runs from Buffalo to Albany, and the trip through Syracuse will represent the halfway point in the week-long tour. They travel about 50 miles each day, stopping to visit historical and cultural sites along the way. The group plans a celebration this afternoon at the Rosemond Gifford Zoo, and will spend the night camping in Burnet Park before continuing their journey.
The Cycling The Erie Canalway Tour travels along the Erie Canal Trail, which is 75 percent complete. When finished, it will be the longest multi-use trail in the United States.
