Some Syracuse homeowners are getting an unpleasant surprise in the mail - a bill from the city for thousands of dollars in sidewalk repair.

The city's Department of Public Works Commissioner Pete O'Connor says it is the homeowner's responsibility to maintain sidewalks in front of their home, and the city has a policy of repairing sidewalks when they get complaints about them.  He admits the cost can be high - one homeowner got a bill for $17,000 for repairs - but O'Connor points out that the city will put the cost on the homeowner's property tax bill and spread the cost over 10 years.

The city's Transportation Committee will be meeting Tuesday afternoon, and it's likely the sidewalk repair policy will be on the agenda.
