Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh reports that three teens have escaped injury after their boat capsized in Skaneateles Lake.

Today around 3:10 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies along with emergency personnel responded to a report of a boat in distress on Skaneateles Lake. A concerned citizen called 911 this afternoon after observing an occupied 16 foot canoe boat, being pulled out towards the middle of the lake, due to the high gust of winds that travelled through the Central New York area.

While emergency crews were being dispatched to the scene, the canoe capsized, leaving the three teens treading water.

An employee from the Skaneateles Marina, who also observed the incident, responded with a pontoon style boat and was able to pull the three teen occupants to safety. The teens, who were not wearing any floatation devices, were brought to shore where they were medically evaluated by emergency personnel.

Deputies were able to identify the three teens as 19 year old Shane Pfohl of Skaneateles, 18 year old Timothy Smith and 19 year old Sol Escribano  both of Syracuse. In addition to investigating the capsized boat, Escribano was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and was issued an appearance ticket.

The winds on Skaneateles Lake were reported to be up to 40 miles per hour this afternoon. None of the three teens were hurt as a result of the capsizing canoe.
